About the Event Organizer

The local organizer of JURIX 2022 – Saarland University – is a modern university in the Saar-Lor-Lux area – a dynamic region in the heart of Europe defined by the common borders of Germany, France and Luxembourg. Saarland University has been distinctively internationally oriented ever since it has been established in cooperation with France in 1948.

Today, about 17.000 students are being enrolled at Saarland University, including the faculty of medicine in Homburg. 20 % of these are international students.

Though Saarland is among Germany’s smallest federal states, Saarland University hosts many key institutes dealing with Informatics and Information Technology and is one of the leading locations for IT Security research in Germany.

Saarland University campus is home to two separate Max Planck Institutes in the field of computer science, the Helmholtz Center for Information Security (CISPA), and the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI).

The Institute of Legal Informatics is part of the faculty of law at Saarland University. Four professorial chairs from Saarland University and one professorial chair from the University of Luxembourg work together here. The directors are the Professors Georg Borges, Philippe Cossalter, Christoph Sorge, Stephan Weth and Maximilian Herberger, as well as Marc Cole from Luxembourg. Students at Saarland University are able to specialize in IT Law and Legal Informatics early in their studies. The Institute offers some of the few possibilities available nationally to obtain a recognized qualification in this area of law: students may either opt for taking part in a full LL.M program to specialize in IT law and legal informatics or in a smaller certificate study program „IT Law and Legal Informatics“ which they can complete already during their studies. Furthermore, they may also choose to study IT law and legal informatics as a special two-semester elective subject area forming part of and being counted towards their law degree. Finally, the Institute offers an international and interdisciplinary Summer School “IT Law and Legal Informatics”.

Due to its close ties with CISPA, the German Conference on Information Technology in the Judiciary, the Horst-Görtz-Institute for IT Security (HGI) and co-operations with further renowned universities, the Institute of Legal Informatics is extremely well interconnected – both on a national and an international level.
