AI and Machine Learning – their benefits and drawbacks for use in ODR (half day)
Online Dispute Resolution was first developed in the late 1990s, primarily to resolve Ecommerce disputes. Since 2010, ODR has been used for helping resolve general disputes. Two such systems, the British Columbia Civil Resolution Tribunal and Rechtwijzer in the Netherlands us rule based reasoning to provide ADR support. Our goal is to develop ODR systems that can be used by non-legal professionals. To do so, we survey ODR systems, especially ones that use AI, are user centric and help Self Represented litigants. We then propose a methodology for constructing such systems using AI and ML. Next we evaluate our methodology. We conclude by discussing governance and ethical guidelines for the use of such systems in the administration of justice field.
